• I have served as a part-time medical school and residency application advisor and editor for over three years, in conjunction with teaching writing. 38 applicants whom I have worked with have been accepted by medical schools or matched with residency programs!

Editing Philosophy and Style: Overcoming writer’s block and more!

I have extensive experience in providing detailed positive and constructive written feedback to a range of different writers.

Thus, as an editor, I often comment with extra resources I have gathered so writers may continue strengthening their knowledge of writing independently.

Continuous Reflection, Learning, and Development
In the past few years especially, I have refined:

• Paring down lengthy writing to specific word/character limits to capture main ideas concisely
• Summarizing complex scientific research so it is understandable to most audiences
• Not omitting someone’s unique writing voice with my editing, but instead bolstering their writing to make their voice clear and purposeful
• Working with writers to overcome writer’s block and lack of confidence: to help writers see through the obstacles and strive toward our goal

2021–Present: Online Part-Time Master Writing Advisor at MedSchoolCoach

• Edited medical school personal statements, activities lists, and specific school essays (called secondaries), letters of intent, update letters, and resumes
• Edited residency CVs, personal statements, ERAS activities, letters of intent, and other essays

2018–2020: LGBTQ+ Community Writing Group Facilitator at Affirmations

• Provided verbal positive and constructive feedback on creative writing from a number of talented LGBTQ+ writers in the metro Detroit area

2018–2019: Research Assistant at Wayne State University

• Wrote and edited with a research team and produced a 2021 peer-reviewed publication
• Wrote a white paper to implement directed-self placement at Wayne State University

2017–2018: Writing Center Tutor and Administrative Assistant at Wayne State University

• Collaborated with dozens of graduate students to develop content for, proofread, and copy edit scientific and engineering master’s theses and dissertations, from start to finish
• Tutored undergraduate and graduate students in writing from various disciplines, including many nursing graduate students

2016–2020: Ph.D. Student at Wayne State University

• Studied the teaching of writing, particularly multimodal, interdisciplinary writing
• Proofread and commented on peers’ research papers and dissertations

2015–2024: 9 years of experience teaching academic writing at five U.S. universities

• Provided written and verbal feedback to hundreds of diverse undergraduate students, including in 10-minute live meetings to develop their writing
• Taught disciplinary-specific, research-based writing and communication
• Taught AMA, APA, Chicago Author-Date, Chicago Notes and Bibliography, IEEE, MLA, and NLM/Vancouver citation styles
• Published 3 other projects during my Ph.D., including another collaborative publication, and cited using APA and MLA
